Does anyone have a recipe (preferably THE recipe...) for this fly, referred to in McGuane's book?

Pattern from Art Lingren's "Dean R. Journal" (Amato Pub. 2000) is

McVey Ugly:

hook: #2 - 10 low water or dry fly;
body: rear 1/3 red seal fur, front 2/3 black seal fur;
wings: "moose mane splayed at sides with stubs clipped and flared near hook eye"

Designed by Peter McVey, Merritt, BC.

A good friend of mine from Kamloops ties a version with a deer hair wing and a red wool tail instead of the red butt, which works well for him... Not sure if that version originated with McVey or elsewhere.

Kind of a waking version of the old "McLeod Ugly" wet fly.

Peter also builds a wicked bamboo rod, and cooks a mean prime rib.
