I admire many of you here because of your artistic skills and creativity. Those of who tie in hand I applaud all the more. The experiments and ideas are superb forms of expression thought and concise pattern evolution even when it's just for fun

Jin Woo Lee is someone I follow on media. And I thought I'd share one of his many incredible works here. There are so many SO MANY!! and maybe I'll post a few down the line but here is one that spoke to me

Tied in hand

Enjoy!

Hey James,
I am lucky enough to call Jin a friend, he's a world class fly tier and he is the most humble guy you can meet, he's a really great person. His flies are works of art, and watching him tie is a treat, he is so good he makes it look easy. You should see him cast.....
Jim
Jim,

Thank you for sharing that with me. I am in awe of his work and his pictures actually do a fair job capturing how exquisite his flies are. There are many talented people among us but for me, his work is unequivocal. Without equal for many reasons. That he can perform it in hand in those sizes with these materials to such perfection puts him in a very select group but more over it's a testament of the time study commitment and discipline that man possesses. I look at his work and I am both filled with envy and delight. It's really good to see pictures of him fishing as he looks like he is having just a blast doing it. I wish I could share time with with him as you describe. Consider yourself fortunate to have such people who have great talent and equal decency among your friends

I could go on posting his whole instagram but you all should see it for yourselves. There is a lot to learn from his work and I hope continues sharing his work. I look at his size 16s and just wonder to myself "how the heck did he do that" hah

Cheers,
J

Many thanks for sharing, James. Everything previously said about Jin is so. I met him in Renton, WA last spring. The whole collection of tiers (and their skills) was overwhelming. I'm not qualified to evaluate his tying, but it moves me deeply. He, generously and attentively, shared his time with me... answered questions he's probably been asked hundreds of time and filled me with a desire to tie similar flies AND get them wet like he does. Above all, he is a gentle man. I feel privileged to have met him.

My pleasure

Here is his Instagram - be sure and mull over each fly as there is a lot going on and you can see how his techniques have evolved over time and the different directions he has taken.

I have found in life that if I can master one detail, one isolated aspect about anything, I can be content or satisfied enough knowing I was able to perform a part of a whole respectably and there is value and honor in that.

As you can see, Jin is able to do so on multiple levels and with varying original designs not poached or built on decades of tradition. That's a true master. To take something that appears to have limited growth and authenticity available and make it all new.

I very much want to ask him if he'd be willing to part with a few but I honestly can't decide if I could bring myself to fish them or simply frame them and hang them by my front door as a pleasant reminder and to share with my guests
