Yuri Shumakov

It is with profound sadness that I share that Yuri had a heart attack and passed away a couple weeks ago while fishing on the Kola. He was a wonderful and charming man, a great fisher and one of the great fly tying artists of our time. I will miss him.

Tragic. Sad for those of us left behind, but he was doing what he loved and there is grace in that.

I can only hope that I meet my fate while on my favorite river.

A sad loss for all of us. I enjoyed conversation with Juri, his enthusiasm for the sport he loved was infectious.

I don't know him other than his flies and website. His imagination always tickled mine and then some.

Well put Chris. Ditto

I wish I would have known of him and his work while he was still alive. There's some tremendously creative stuff there. A great loss indeed!

I spoke (via eMail) to Yuri literaly the day before he left for Kola - he was as usual looking forward to it ...

" ... Stuart you'vecaught me allmost at the door: I go to Russia for one and half month. I plan to go to Kola Peninsula in the middle of July to Varzina river (13th July). Got place as senior guide in upper camp. That will be prime time for huge brown trout there. Then I expect to take a part in Russian-British expedition to Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia. Group will try to cover 5 different rivers in attempt to catch biggest in the world Taimyr's Arctic char. In this region it grows up to 15 kg, so really trophy fishing. Additionally, some of those rivers haven't been visited of flyfishermen at all and some of them faced scientists only about 70-80 years ago. Pure wildness. Talk to you when I get back ...."

It sounds as if he didnt make it to Taimyr.

A great guy.

A sad loss indeed.

He was aquainted to some of the guys in the angling club Im a member of and he was taking members of the club to the Kola, at very fair prices and along with his unique knowledge of these waters. Too bad I never made the decision to go... He was a great fly tyer and recently his salmon fly metal tubes hit the market, reflected in a few articles in British and Scandinavian angling magazines. His short brass tubes, with the groves at the rear, are the ones I caught most fish on last spring. I feel bad for his family, he should have had many good years ahead of him!
