I was wondering how the LST switch rods cast and if the 6wt would be good for cutthroat and the occasional small salmon? Also what kind of line could I put on it to make single hand over head casts and long roll casts in the salt?
In my experience these rods are rated for single hand lines rather than spey lines. I'm not quite clear what presentation you're fishing. The 6wt would be fun with river cutts. A steelhead taper will roll cast, but isn't ideal for overhead work. The 6wt likes a 5wt steelhead taper and is a moderate action rod. I often use mine fishing soft hackles at a distance. I haven't cast the 8wt, but suspect similar flex profile. I'd steer away from salmon with the 6wt.
This rod is superb with 5 wgt Steelhead taper line. It's my lightest weight rod for fish under 24". It also works well for dry flies.
