Hi,
For all of you who wants to explore the Terrace and surounding Rivers by your self, or with your buddys,(up to six people)
Check out my web site www.diylodge.com
You can stay at this lodge and fish the spots you want to fish without a guide.
Rental of our raft gives you the opportunity and freedom to get to places where you're not able to get from the roads.

If you want to come for the Steelhead season, we have the last week of March open and 1st till 17th of April.
Send me a e-mail if you want more info at www.info@diylodge.com

Botsari I am thinking the very same thing!

I'm wondering how you get the raft back and what happens if the river is. Low but maybe that's just a risk you take

Yeah, thinking this over a bit more on the too good to be true vein: the truck/raft rentals: nothing anywhere about insurance. If only all car rentals were that simple. Or is that there truck privately owned and its sort of under-the-table arrangement?

It looks like its just the one lodge, so I'm not sure if there is staffing to manage guiding/shuttling/housekeeping etc. And, a lodge looking that good would fill its yearly bookings in Quebec or the Maritimes for easily twice that amount per day.

Review from experience would be a great source of validation on what many of us are pondering right now.

I think a lot of the questions might be answered with a close reading of diylodge's post and the web site.

The operative words are "do it yourself". The house looks really nice (the owners are in construction and he used to guide), the truck has a winch and set up for the raft, and you can arrange a shuttle locally. I've been working on plans for the spring and summer for weeks and a quick phone call put this place on the "make it happen" list.

David and Rowena- welcome to the Pages. I am a very rank and file member but I've been lurking around here for more than ten years so I very much appreciate your sponsorship.

I just hope me and my gang can get our little acts together and book before we lose the slot we want...

Hi guys..Thank you for all the responses. This will help me a lot to perfect my D.I.Y LODGE set up.
One of your concerns is the rental of the truck/raft, how to get back to the raft drop-in point; well, if you're planning to raft the Kitimat River for instance, there is a shuttle service available, you call them and tell them the info, such as:Where you droped the raft in the river and where you will pull out. They will pick up the truck and drop it of at the pull-out spot. Just leave the keys in the truck; they know the door code. (Last year they charged $25 for the service.)
If it's going to be another river you would like to fish; we could supply a bike that you would take on to the trip. Drop the bike of at the pull-out site (lock it), go upstream, drop in the raft, fish your way down stream, pull out where you left the bike (GPS/cell phone works great), one guy takes the bike (poor guy) bikes to the truck and drives back to the pull out spot where the rest of your buds (lucky guys) are, load-up the raft and off you go: Simple...
Live jackets will be provided with the raft.
The truck is insured commercially, so don't worry, all you have to do is get a travelers' insurance before making the trip to Terrace, and have a valid drivers licence of course.
Another thing I read is, that it may be to good to be true. This year will be my trial year for this concept, which is why we left the rental prices on the lower side, to make sure that the price is not an issue.
For the rest, its good and its true, you will not be disappointed.
I encourage everyone who stays at the DIY LODGE, to post there experience on every site possible.

I will up-date www.diylodge.com this weekend, and ad more info regarding these remarks and more like guided (day) trips, meal options etc.
If you have anny questions, please don't hesitate to send me a email at; www.info@diylodge.com.

Regards,
David Wulms.

Best I know ...anyone who supports a non resident with a vehicle or accommodations to fish (ie: Yankee or any other foreign national) without having a guides licence or rod days contravenes the B.C regulations. I am sure the C/O 's would interested in the this deal. Surprisingly enough most residents would like F/N to go home....at least for a few months.

So the last 25 years I rented trucks at National Car Rentals, hotel accommodation and cabins in Terrace, Smithers and Houston, and I am a NRA who fished almost all Skeena tribs.
You say that all those companies, I'm sure they do not have guiding licenses, contravenes the B.C regulations?

I believe that as long as you do not accompany your guests while fishing you will be fine, and I would make sure that they understand that means you can not shuttle to and from the rivers. It might be a good idea to have a conversation with the local CO's just to have a clear understanding on what services you wish to provide and to discover what line not to cross. If you are forthcoming with them, it may help if a local guide or lodge reports you out of jealousy etc.

With respect to some other opinions , I think the lodge is offering a service "DIY" . There are many " B&B's from Houston to Terrace that cater to fisher's from around the world, I don't feel that this lodge is doing anything "wrong" and is offering a chance for people of more modest means... some of my best fishing friends and aquaintance's are "foreign nationals", majority of them have excellent ettiquite and morals with fishing. Some of them here on "Pages" , they've all paid their dues & in many respect's are very conservation minded.... Respect's Steve

Amen Steve. Thanks for putting things in a much needed perspective. DIY is offering accommodations and vehicle rental at a refreshingly affordable price. Not everyone who travels to the Skeena watershed is a mega rich NRA. Simple blue collar local folk such as yourself and others from BC (me) are in dire need of something like this which is simply a base camp for the many miles and hours of exploring and learning these great rivers the hard way as so many have done before. Only now we won't have to do it while sleeping in the back of our trucks in late October. Just my two cents, SH.
