poly/versi

Hello everyone,
Regarding the poly / versileader, do you include them in the total length of your leader?

Thank you

Christian

In most cases yes. I would normally use a bit longer mono leader for the same given head that I use the poly on. Then there are instances where you cut your head back to utilize longer such as 15' poly. In that case poly becomes somewhat of an extention of a line. Best practice is to follow the guidelines. Normally 10' polys are good with shorter rods and longer scandis whereas 15' are better utilized on cut back heads or long rods.

Yes, I do. For example if I'm using a fifteen foot tapered leader and want to use a poly , I'll use one of the same length with a short section of tippet as a transition to the fly. But I wouldn't normally loop the same length of tapered-leader to a poly. That's not to say that one can't/shouldn't select a poly that matches the length of leader. 10 foot poly with a ten foot leader looped ahead of it for example , or 12 to 12 and 15 to 15. There are places where I would do that.

I think they can be considered half as a line length and weight! Of course their weigth/length vary a lot nowadays and heavy and long ones can used as a shooting head for light single handle rod.

Assuming your looking at Scandi style casting /fishing.Most shooting heads perform at their best with a leader a bit longer than the length of the rod,the poly. will be integral to the length of the leader, but not to the weight of the shooting head.So I'd be looking say for a 15ft rod to have a 10ft poly and maybe 7 or 8 feet of cast material to the flee.If I were conscious of fishing at depth with a sinking head and poly,I'd shorten the cast material to say 5ft.Were I using a full tapered leader from a floating head,I'd happily use a 15ft tapered leader and another 5ft of cast material to the flee.I do sometimes use 15ft polys, but generally the 10ft polys live in my jacket pocket all the time.
If I'm using a Multi tip shooting head I prefer a 5ft poly and 5ft of cast material to the flee, simply matching the sink rate of the poly to that of the tip.I hasten to add not talking Skagity tips here, just the usual 15ft Versi tips.
If one is using sinking polys,it's usually for a reason and going too long with the cast material may well see your depth control adversely affected!.
