Have cast my buddies 489. It's a sweet rod but I would call it a "stout" 4 wt that would do best with a heavy half line. He is currently fishing it with the Airflo river and stream line and loves the way it single speys. I would love one of his DAL rods but they are out of my price range.

Before DH rods evolution started in late 90's Kerry has been already designing and making the best SH rod and blanks from graphite fabric.

Here is a link:

Trout ? CF Burkheimer

Keep in minde that custom designs and adjustments are available.

DAL 489-4 is an outstanding trout rod for dry fly and light nymphing.

595-4 is as good as it gets general rod for lower 48. It can cast wt.5 and wt.6 WF line; it is more of a 5/6 rod. ; nymphing, streamers and dry fly. Will land without harm 24-25 inch Rainbow and protect 4X tippet when casting dry fly

695-4 and 695-6 DAL ( of of a 6/7 rods) ideal rod for really large Rainbows and perfect for mousing

5115-4 a perfect large Alaskan Rainbow short DH rod.

595-4 and Alaskan Leopard Rainbow

695-4 and AK Rainbow

and here what DH 5115-4 can do for you: : AK Rainbows

I call burkheimer and talked to them, which is always a bad idea. I was thinking about the 489 DAL and they confirmed that that was the one. so I have a decision to make.

I think you're just getting comfortable with a decision you've already made.

DAL Deep Action Load does NOT mean it is a soft rod. It is relative term.

I have the 489-2, 595-4 and 695-4. I love them all. Each is my favorite in their respective weights. Check out: Burkheimer trout rod

I ordered a classic 489-4 DAL with a an agate stripping guide. They said it's about two months wait time right now, which sucks but it will be worth the wait.

Thanks for all your help

I've got a 389-3 trout, and a 5 and 6 DAL. My favorite single hand rods that aren't cane. I just got the 6 a few weeks ago, so it's awaiting a certain big bug hatch to be christened.

You'll love it. Congrats.

Single Handed Spey

If your going to invest into a single handed spey, You may just want to go with a 11" Trout Spey. The rod is light and handle is short you can use it as a spey/switch and single handed rod.

Anything less than 11" go with a regular trout rod of 10' with spey head. Spey casting has more to do with the selection of line for rod load and power to roll out a cast (switch casts) versus overhead cast and has less to do with the rod.

A 3/4 wt Trout Spey will throw an 5wt singe handed line (180-225 gms).
